Federal Judge Strikes Down Virginia’s Same-Sex Marriage Ban
A federal judge declared Virginia’s same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional, the state’s attorney general announced late Thursday. The decision was immediately stayed, pending an appeal.
The judge said the marriage ban violated the rights guaranteed under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.
“We have arrived upon another moment in history when We the People becomes more inclusive, and our freedom more perfect,” the ruling said.
The decision came after Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring filed papers opposing the constitutionality of the amendment banning such marriages. [source]
